Prior to working with NextLevel to implement Avatax our sales tax processes were extremely labor intensive. We used a simple rate upload by zip code to calculate our sales taxes and remitted our own returns and payments. Because we sell tangible personal property and provide services the simple “flat” rate chart could not discern the difference between a taxable versus non-taxable event. As a result customers took deductions for inaccurately charged taxes which we many times would have to then correct. In addition, one staff member spent a minimum of one entire day per month filing returns and remitting payments!
Now with Avatax even in the most complex jurisdictions tax calculations are accurate. Our dashboard is a great resource for reviewing and balancing monthly transactions.
We no longer have a person dedicated to filing returns and remitting payments since Avalara does all of this for us, which opened up some time to improve other internal processes. From a compliance standpoint we are much more confident. In fact we recently underwent a sales tax audit by one of the states known to be a tough audit and the result was a payment due of only $844!
